“Well?,” Ciaran asks.

“We have a meeting place.”

“Right. I’ll signal the Council, get this fella picked up for further questioning.”

I straighten then turn to face him, tucking the paper into my pocket. For a moment, I hesitate. But I made my decision the second he kissed me. I have a heart of ice and I work alone. Always.

“I’m sorry about this, Ciaran.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Sorry for what?”

I crack him across the temple with the hilt of my knife just as I did with the rogue vampire. Ciaran crumples to the ground.

I raise my left hand to my mouth and press the bluestone ring Olivia gave me. It crackles into life with a small beep and I speak quickly.

“One rogue to pick up. Ciaran has taken a knock and needs collecting. I’m going on.”

I press the stone again to transmit our coordinates to the evacuation team then glance up at the sky. It’s already past midday.

Time to go. I walk towards the fire escape but find myself pausing and looking back at Ciaran. He’s going to be really annoyed when he wakes. But what choice did I have? He should have known better than to try and befriend me. I am Marney. I have no friends. Only my duty. I can’t afford the distraction of having him around. And I don’t like the effect he has on me.

He looks strangely peaceful. His black hair has fallen forward across his face and I can see a tiny vein in his neck throbbing. He doesn’t look like a vampire. He doesn’t look like a monster. He looks vulnerable somehow. My heart skips suddenly as I realize he reminds me of somebody else. Somebody I knew a lifetime ago.

A wave of grief and guilt suddenly doubles me over and I’m gasping, gasping, as memory floods through me.

This is no good. I close my eyes for a second and massage my temples. The memories fade as I lock them in that dark part of my mind where I keep them. Slowly, I straighten then jump down onto the fire escape and make my way onto London’s streets.

I have work to do.
